How to get Google Dialer on Moto X – 10/09/14
Now first off, this version of Google Dialer is pulled from 4.4.3, but working on 4.4.4 on my Moto x.
My process is based on the one from XDA Developers, but going through that process didn’t work for me. So this is basically the workaround.
- THIS file
- A rooted Moto X with TWRP
I haven’t used CWM to test this so for consistency purposes I am assuming the majority of you use TWRP.
The issue with simply copying and pasting the APK using a file manager is that the permissions of the folder is pretty much write protected. I was unable to delete the Dialer.APK through an android file manager.
NOVA LAUNCHER IS NOT NEEDED
So Let’s get started.
MAKE A DAMN BACKUP. I deleted my dialer.apk and had to reformat the X just to get the dialer app working again. Copying the dialer.apk from the file manager didnt seem to work, so i used TWRP to make a system backup.
Copy the downloaded APK to your SD card.
Boot into TWRP, press MOUNT, checkmark SYSTEM, go back to main menu.
Click ADVANCED>FILE MANAGER>Navigate to /system/priv-app
Tap Dialer.APK and DELETE it.
Copy and paste the downloaded Dialer.APK into /system/priv-app
STEP 5 (VERY IMPORTANT)
Now in the android file manager, I had difficulty changing permissions (it was impossible for some reason). And so in this step you tap the copied Dialer.apk. Tap CHMOD (not chmod 755). A keyboard and textbox will show up and enter “0644” in the field. Click Go>Swipe to confirm.
STEP 6 (STILL NOT DONE YET!)
Go back to main menu (for consistency sake) and go back to the file manager (ADVANCED>FILEMANAGER). Navigate to /system and tap SELECT on the bottom right corner.
It should say “Folder Selected: /system“. Tap CHMOD and enter “0777” to enable all write, read and execute permissions. Go>Swipe to confirm>back.
Reboot! Yay! (reboot system)
NOW, the annoying part. Opening the Google dialer fails and displays “Unfortunately, Google Dialer has stopped.” Please don’t panic. Open the ANDROID file manager (by this I mean ES file manager or similar sorts with root access of course). Navigate to the folder where you placed your dialer.APK. Click and install it. it should take about 30 seconds or less.
ENJOY YOUR GOOGLE DIALER!
Unfortunately, this is only a work around. The dialer stops working if you reboot (which honestly.. how often do you reboot your phone on a daily basis anyways). But fortunately, you do not have to go through this WHOLE tutorial to fix this issue. Simply repeat step 8: Install the APK.
I apologize for the lack of pictures.
Hope this works for you all!
