Increasing Wifi Speeds – 18/12/14
I upgraded to Rogers Hybrid 60 a while ago. The internet package offered 60Mbps download and 10 upload. Using my TP-Link N600 WDR3500 as a main access point in my room, I got about 50Mbps down and 12 up (on the 5GHz band). I also got 30mbps down while using the 2.4GHz band. Surprisingly, while connected via Ethernet, I was able to get almost 90Mbps download with 13mbps upload.
I loaded DD-WRT onto the WDR3500 and started tinkering with the settings. Before hand, I had about 6 SSIDs configured; each on seperate subnets. This caused inaccessibility when trying to access devices across different networks. IP cameras needed to be under the same SSID. To fix this, I simply set up my main access point to bridge off the main router (in the basement). Doing so increased the range and allowed for a single network and solves the issue of IP camera access.
I also updated the security settings. Since no device in the house are 802.11g/b/a anymore, I changed the operating mode to “5GHz N only”. I changed the Channel width to “Wide HT40 (20+20 MHz)”, which is essentially the same thing as “Turbo (40 MHz)” on other versions of DD-WRT. I used Wifi analyzer to decide which wireless channel was optimal for both bands. Since 5GHz is not crowded at all, I set it to the highest operating frequency (cuz higher is faster, right?).
After bridging the networks and SSIDs, Android on my Nexus 7 reported the link speed of 150mbps (although the router claimed to be 300mbps. This may be due to the new firmware). This was an increase from 54Mbps prior to the setting changes. I ran a speedtest using speedtest.net on both bands and was able to get 83mbps on the 5Ghz band and 60mbps on the 2.4GHz band (download).
