Zalman 9900MAX Review – 01/11/14
I purchased this cooler for an i5 4690k CPU. I have been eyeing this cooler ever since my original build back in 2012. The beefy heat pipes and attractive fins caught my eye. However, due to the high price of 60CAD, I opted for the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO.
In terms of its physical aspects, the cooler is quite massive. Measuring over 140mm in height, the cooler may have difficulty fitting is smaller cases. The blue led is not bright and manages to place a nice ambient effect around the cooler.
The cooler spins at a maximum of 1600RPM, with a minimum of 1000RPM. During testing, it managed to keep the 4690k at 65°C under full Prime95 load. Idle temperatures are very cool at 23°C. Sound wise, I was a little concerned. There is a slight fluctuating whine that if placed in a silent room, the sound would be audible. The sound of the fan is not loud, it is not quiet. It is a low hum and is considered audible considering it is the only fan in the system.
Observations may improve when encased as the system is currently not housed in a case.
